Abstract
US economic sanctions against Iran are a critical issue in international relations. These sanctions have had significant impacts on Iran's economy, politics, and society, and are used by the United States as a powerful tool to achieve its political, economic, and security objectives. Iran, on the other hand, is also seeking to counter these sanctions and protect its national interests. This study, conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, focuses on evaluating US economic sanctions against Iran as a tool for coercive diplomacy to assess the legitimacy (legitimacy or illegitimacy) of these sanctions in the international legal arena. The findings of this study show that US economic sanctions against Iran have acted as a tool of coercive diplomacy. These sanctions are controversial under international law and have no clear legal basis. They are often seen as coercion and a violation of the sovereignty of the target state. They can increase tensions in international relations and lead to retaliatory measures. They may be used to circumvent multilateral processes and international consensus. Their effectiveness in achieving their intended goals is often uneven and unpredictable. Unilateral sanctions are a complex tool with significant legal, political and economic consequences.
